Doctor Peter Khamvongsa was born in Washington DC, and subsequently spent fifteen years of his childhood in Puerto Rico where he attended Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola, graduated with honors and was awarded Senior of the year. He returned to Washington D.C. to attend Georgetown University, where he received the Robert Bellarmine Scholarship, awarded to students nominated by their Jesuit high school who ranked first in their class. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Psychology and graduated Cum Laude in 1987.

Due to outstanding academic performance, Dr. Peter Khamvongsa received an early acceptance to Georgetown University School of Medicine in his sophomore year, from which he graduated with honors in 1991. He performed his internship and residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland; as a Galloway Fellow he spent three months in the Gynecologic Oncology service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York in 1993 and completed his training in 1995.

From 1995 to 1999 he worked with the United States Navy overseas and in Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he served as Chief of the Division of Ambulatory Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director of the Colposcopy and Minimally Invasive Clinic, and as Assistant Professor of OB GYN for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USHUS). From 1999 until 2003, Dr. Khamvongsa worked in private practice, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and drilled as member of the Naval Reserve in the Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia area. In the summer of 2003, Dr. Khamvongsa and his family moved to Miami after being activated to active duty for operation Noble Eagle and the Iraqi war.

gynecologist in miamiDr. Khamvongsa is board certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. He is an active member in the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Society of Pelvic and Reconstructive Surgeons, to name a few, as well as local Societies.

He has a strong commitment for patient education and resident teaching. He is an assistant clinical professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at USHUS and George Washington University School of Medicine. He is an active reservist in the United States Navy where he holds the rank of Commander.

He joined the group practice of Dr. Monzon, Kellog, Iparraguirre, Safinski and Spiegelman in the fall of 2003 and has privileges at The Baptist Hospital of Miami. Dr. Khamvongsa has five children and he is fluent in Spanish and French.
